JAIME LEA AND THE BUMBLEBEE is a beautifully illustrated children's book all in rhyme. It tells the story about a kind young boy in a wheelchair who does a good deed. His garden fairy grants him a wish. She turns him into a bumblebee and he flies off on his first big adventure. He enjoys the best day of his life and then is returned to his wheelchair. He decides not to tell his mum in case she thinks it was all just a dream.

Age Range (3 - 8) A lovely bedtime story for younger children, and suitable for older children too.

Jaime Lea and the Bumblebee edition by Adrian Thorpe Matthew Thorpe Children eBooks

"Jaime Lea and the Bumblebee" by Adrian Thorpe, and illustrated by Matthew Thorpe, features a young boy named Jaime Lea, who is known by all the kids in the village. The illustrations in this book are very good, and appropriate to the text. Jaime Lea happens to have been in a wheelchair since he was 3 years old. Jaime loved doing things all kids love, like playing games or watching TV. But most of all Jaime loved to just be out in his garden, watching the flowers and trees, the insects and bees; especially the bees.

One day Jaime gave some honey to a tired bee. That honey gave it the strength to fly back home. So, perhaps in payment for his kindness to the bee, a garden fairy popped up and asked Jaime what he would want to be, if he could be anything in the world. Rather than say he'd like to be a football player or pop star, Jaime said he was content just being Jaime. This answer made the fairy cry, and fairy tears apparently grant one wish to whomever they fall upon. Jaime's one wish was to be able to fly like a bee, so the fairy granted him that wish and turned him into a bumblebee for a day.

Jaime had a grand day flying with the bees, inspecting his garden from a whole new perspective. He even helped the bees gather pollen, and discovered the joy of hard work done well. As the sun was setting, and the bees went into their hive for the night, Jaime returned to his wheelchair, whereupon he turned back into a boy. Although his arms hurt from all the flying, he knew he would never forget this day!

This is a very cute tale, and works on many levels. What should most impress children is the fact that Jaime's wheelchair was not a factor in who he is, what he enjoys, what he might wish for. He was the same as every other kid his age, and that is a critical lesson for children to learn. In fact, it is a critical lesson for many parents to learn, too. I highly recommend this book for pre-readers through the middle grades. This would make an excellent addition to any child's library.
